RE: Pros/Cons of GM diesels

Injector wire harness failure is a common occurrence. It has happened twice to mine. Usually, it is the number 2 and the number 7 injector harness that goes bad. LB7 motors, which are the early 04's and previous Duramax motors, did have a problem with the injectors. GM now warranties the injectors on those motors to 200,000 miles, if I remember correctly. And they usually replace all 8 injectors when the go bad on the LB7's.
LLYs, like mine, have been known to overheat under certain circumstances. Usually if you are towing heavy, up long grades, in high elevations, for an extended period of time. Mine has done this also.
I know there are thousands of people who will claim that this is not the case....but there are several people who have documented these problems over on "thedieselplace"

RE: Running from a hurricane in a fiver

We just went through Fay in Carrebelle, FL in our fifthwheel. NOW, we move over to Picayune, MS to visit some friends...and now we have Gustave??? I think they are following us around. LOL
We are staying put. The evacuation routes are crazy packed with people. Fay was sporting 40-60MPH winds and we were 25' from the shore. We are looking at some rain and wind....but it seems like its doable in the area were are located.

RE: We just broke the awning--Tropical storm Fay is almost here!

We are still riding the storm out here in Carrabelle, FL. RAIN and gusty winds, but no damage here at the campground.

RE: Additional Gauges for my 2006 Diesel Dodge TV

Check out Aeroforce scan gauge. Shows tons of parameters and plugs into your OBD II under the dash. Fits into a common 2" gauge hole.

RE: What programer would you get???

You can get a EfiLive V1 from Socaldiesel.com for $549. It will work on all the Duramax engines up to the 06 model, then you need the V2 which is around $750. There are tons of tunes that you can share....I have a couple of tow tunes for the LB7 like you have, that I'd be willing to turn you on to for free. They also have a tune library over at the dieselplace.com, and you can freely download and try tunes out there.
They have a very good support group and will answer any questions you might have.
Also, check out the Aeroforce Scan gauge. Several parameters that you can read for the Allison/Duramax combo. And can read and clear codes too.

RE: motor oil

The only reason I can see for changing to a synthetic, would be for extended drain intervals. Other than that, most people can't justify the additional cost of the synthetics over regular oil. Meaning....I can see no benefit to switching to synthetic, and continuing to change your oil at the same intervals as you did with the regular oil.
Your truck will easily see over 200,000 miles no matter which you choose.

RE: Duramax MPG with Chip and Exhaust...

I think you only looked at HALF of his original post Randy......Here is what he did in my opinion.
He loaded up his 120HP tune, and got on it a few times just to see what it would do. Smoke and power without a concern of MPG.
THEN, he went on a 600 mile drive with the 120HP tune driving NORMALLY, and saw greater mileage gains.
Believe it Randy....I have a 450+HP tune that I am running right now, gets better mileage than the stock tuning the factory puts in.....and is smokeless.

RE: new camper having bathroom troubles

I know what Odorlos claims as that was the brand I used before I stopped using commercial holding tank chemicals 6 years ago. I also know it takes weeks/months for the enzymes to actually break down solids. We have had a member years ago who was a septic man that taught many on here about these products. Believe what you want to.
NCH
Curious as to what, if anything, do you use now??

RE: Duramax MPG with Chip and Exhaust...

I am not surprised by the improvement in mileage you get on the hotter tune. Advancing the timing will increase you engine's efficiency.
I use EFILive, which will let me rewrite the programming of my truck's computer. My best mileage consists of: Advancing the timing, and lowering the cruising boost level. I can run with the boost at 1-5Lbs while cruising empty at highway speeds, and get very decent mileage out of my truck. Making boost takes horse power...so I use it only when needed.
You are also right on the threshold of what a stock Allison will comfortably hold without slipping. BUT, you can run at that level so long as you do it in a reasonable manner. IE: Not hammering it in overdrive. I would also not tow at that level.

RE: Diesel performance

I liked the post every one lies, but I ran (not towing) from Salt Lake City to Denver on I80 with my 07 Dodge w/6.7L 6spd auto. heading East we averaged 18mpg then on the return we had a head wind dropped to 15mpg. calculations using the pencil. the idiot gage never went above 16mpg. so I think this is darn good. now when I put my 5ver on I anticipate 11mpg. So if any of you disagree with my figures then I'm with a good group of liers.:B
I don't think anyone would call you a liar on your posted MPG figures. They seem about right to me. 15-18 empty and an expected 11 towing would be accurate.

RE: Toughest RV travel experience?

Got rear ended in Ensenada, Mexico by a propane truck on our first day in Mexico. Crushed the rear bumper on the fifthwheel camper and punched 2 holes in the fiberglass. Totaled the propane truck! We continued on to the next campground and patched up the holes...continued on to the southern end of Baja.
The driver of the propane truck was at fault and the policia treated us very well. We settled on the spot for the repairs to our rig, and we had a great 3 month vacation.

RE: Why so few reviews of Mexico on rvparkreviews.com?

The Church's book has done a lot of reviews for campgrounds in Mexico. But, what has been reviewed, can change from year to year. Though they seemed to be a good reference from the campgrounds we stayed at in Baja.

RE: Refrigerator problems

Go to the outside access panel of the fridge. Remove it and you will find a black, plastic cover held in place with 3-4 screws. It also says "danger, High voltage" or something around those lines. You should see a 110 household powercord plugged into a standard plug in receptacle. Unplug it and remove the plastic cover that has the warning on it. This is your circuit board and it has a couple of fuses on it...just like on your automobile.
These are very common for failure. Any type of power surge, will blow the fuses. Check them out before you spend the $$$ on a service call. It may be as simple as a blown fuse.

RE: Ever been an RV Instructor?

We had a similar situation in a Las Vegas campground. The campground was just like a Wally World parking lot...packed like sardines! If you put out your slides, you can't extend your awning without almost touching your neighbor's slide. LOL
The owners gave us several sites to choose from and we just backed our 40 footer in the first one we saw was empty. About an hour later, we had a knock at the door and it was an older gentleman and his wife with a good size 5er. He wanted to know if I would back it into one of the sites for him. No problemo....Backed them in and they were very appreciative. My good deed for the day.
Only, that is not the end of the story.....I would later find out, that the campground owner would refer people who were afraid of backing into the small sites to contact me! I actually parked 4 rigs my first day at the campground.
I was more than happy to assist them and figured it was 4 good deeds for the day. You would think they should have given me a discount on my site rent....Nah...its Vegas.

RE: What causes the black cloud of death? UPDATE 6/29

Unless you block the EGR..as posted above....your system will clog up again. Block the EGR and be done with it. Chevy Duramax has the same exact problem.

RE: Duramax diesel smell

Have the injector balance rates checked. They should be within +or-4 in park and +or-6 in drive or reverse whit the engine fully warmed up. Although injector problems are considered rare on the LLY motors...it was a very common issue on the LB7 motors.

RE: MDT Owners - Spare or No Spare Tire

I used to carry a spare when I had 19.5 tires on my Kodiak. 19.5 is a rare tire to find in some areas of the USA. I recently switched to 22.5 wheels and tires and no longer carry a spare.
On another note....The 22.5 tires are MUCH easier to put on a rim that the 19.5.
